Frequent visitors to our site will  notice  recent changes that see the name Zuni feature more promanently than in the past. The visibility of the name Tamaroa has been downplayed so as to remove any chance that the general public could mistake the ship for an active USCG vessel.

In response to a meeting on September 4, 2007, the polled members of the Tamaroa Maritime Foundation unanimously agreed that the former U.S. Coast Guard cutter currently in custody of the Foundation and registered as the Motor Vessel Tamaroa be restored as much as possible to her original configuration as the World War II-era Fleet Ocean Tug USS ZUNI (ATF-95).

As such, the registered name of the ship will be changed from Motor Vessel Tamaroa to M/V Zuni, and corresponding changes will be made to the name of the Foundation as well as in registrations with all relevant authorities.

The significant service of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter TAMAROA and the
memories of those who served aboard her will always be a major part of our
presentation of the ship's history.

I undestand the need for the change but it is a darn shame since the Tam spent most of her time, and earned a great deal of her illustrious history, as a CG ship.

I'm a former crew member of the Tam, 67-68 so I can certainly agree with that sentiment. But we have to grab the attention of the public. Truth to tell my original idea was even more radical. I wanted to turn the Tam into a floating classroom for marine ecology, using the now vacant gun deck as an open air class room. I figure in today's politically correct world teaching marine ecology would be a better use than commerating a war that the vast majority of young'uns know nothing about. But I was outvoted. We shall see what happens. Whatever the case, the Tam in her Zuni days fought at Iwo Jima. Since she is the last survivor of Iwo Jima, we figure that there is value in that story.

Well fellas, my stomach is in knots right now. Last weeks tow attempt failed due to the tug not showing up. We did not get a satisfactory answer so went to another towing company. They promise to tow the Zuni-Tamaroa down to Newport News this Monday. They've also promised to give us a berth for free for several months.

I won't mention they're name yet, since we seem to keep getting shafted at the last minute. But if we pull it off, I will scatter their name all over the internet. Some of you know me and know that I have been fighting since 1996 to save her. I was on my own; writing, writing and writing everyone and anyone who would listen. I finally linked up with a group of Virginians in 2001 who shared the same thoughts that I did about the Tam having a lot of life still left in her. The move to Virginia represents an improvement in our situation 10 fold.

Now we should be able to do something and get her ready for sea again. If any of you reside in the Norfolk, Newport News area, you're welcome to go see her and help out naturally Grin.

Ollie - Although I never sailed on board her, I did spend quite a few days working on her when she was at Governors Island. I wish that it had been possible to retain the name as Tamaroa but if it means additional support(and hopefully funding) I can understand the logic behind the decision and for what its worth back you 100%.

As for Jeff's question, maybe if he spent less time hunting chipmonks and more on the computer he would have found out about this site early on. Jeff since I still cannot access the other site my vote is close it and shift operations to here, most of the people at your site are also on board here.

There is little or no activity on the other site, Jack. I posted this note there yesterday that I will close it on 10/19/2007:

NOW HEAR THIS!

Due to inactivity on THIS forum, I will be shutting it down on 10/19/2007.

All hands are invited to go over to http://usmilnet.com/smf/index.php and sign on there. There is a lot more going on, the forum allows more creativity such as posting photos, etc., and there are a lot more of us there. Some from our group, including me, have already made the transition. All services are welcomed there, and the Coast Guard has its own section.

Thanks for your support, everyone. It's been a good run, but the hull is rusted and beyond repair.

Semper Par!

Jeff

The deceased chipmunk total is down this year, mainly due to fewer chipmunks. Only shot about 20 of them this summer, but it isn't over 'til the fat chipmunk chirps!  ROTF

They're all welcome Jeff  Bravo USCG Flag.  You know if anyone has any particular requests, although there are no guarantees, we do try to be accommodating; that's how things like Coast Guard Pictures, CG Links and CG History got started and lets not forget the ever popular Porpoise Club.
