1MC
« on: December 01, 2007, 10:13:48 am »

All this talk of sea duty, and all the fun that goes with it, brings back memories of a common communication friend (& foe):

The ever popular 1MC,

and the 1MC's sidekick and buddy, the Alarm Circuit:

When these two get together, they make a whole lot of people move.

Heck, these two even have their own Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1MC

Should you miss the sounds of these two, go here to bring back that ole feeling of being underway: http://www.policeinterceptor.com/navysounds.htm

Of course, there is all of our favorite 1MC announcement; "Now: liberty, liberty, liberty!" Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

God, I sure do miss those brain cells    The prelude to liberty call went something like "sweepers, sweepers man your brooms.  Sweep down the ship fore and aft".  Or something like that.  Anybody remember the whole thing Huh? Huh?

I sure do!

"Sweepers, Sweepers, man your brooms. Give the ship a clean sweep down both fore and aft! Sweep down all lower decks, ladder wells and passageways! Dump all garbage clear of the fantail! Now sweepers."

That was my queue to get read for liberty (kind of like, gentlemen; start your engines...), only it backfired a couple of times.  Freaking OODs with Napoleon Syndrome on an ego trip would hold liberty because THEY weren't happy with the sweep down.... *******

The one's you didn't really want to hear were any with "this is not a drill" inserted  Shocked Shocked

"NOW HEAR THIS; fire in the engine room, this is not a drill, all hand man you damage control stations".

One that wasn't common to most buoy tenders was:  "NOW HEAR THIS; this is not a drill, incoming, all hands man your general quarters station".  Both would be accompanied by the alarm sounding  twitch twitch

One I'll bet you never hear anymore is "The Smoking Lamp is Lit"  Grin

I don't know about the Coast Guard, but I'm sure they're the same as the Navy. No longer does the trash get dumped overboard. It's either stowed in boxes and retained until the next port of call, or incinerated, depending on what it is. Food stuffs might still be thrown overboard.

How many of you are familiar with the 5MC ??

The one I hated the most was...............The smoking lamp is out.

There're men working aloft, do not rotate or radiate any electrical or electronic equipment while men are working aloft.

There is a report of heavy black smoke in the engine room..............General Quarters, General Quarters, all hands man your battle stations, proceed up and foreward on starboard, down and aft on port, set condition zebra throughout the ship, make reports to damage control central.

Set condition three throughout the ship

My favorite announcement...............LIBERTY FOR THE CREW..........well unless I had duty.....or Dinner for the crew, Supper for the crew

man overboard, man overboard.............(ahh **** OSCAR fell off the ship again)

Only once was there an annoucement over the 1MC that had the entire group of officers scared ****less...............after 8 bells, Navy Operations arriving  ROTF I was the POOW that day and had a LCDR in my shack with me to ensure it was done properly.... Bang head against wall

I'm assuming that there are still designated smoking areas on board ship.  Been out so long I really don't know.

Not sure..........when I got to the Prairie, we could smoke everywhere except berthing. Then a message went out saying no more smoking in engineering spaces, so the Captain said no more smoking in the skin of the ship. then while in port it was on the helo deck. Then when I transferred to the McKee, it was no smoking in the skin of the ship while in port, but you could smoke in lounges and workspaces underway........that too went away.

as what it is today, I hate to wonder

I'm certainly going to assume that butt kits mounted to the bulkheads of the bridge no longer exist  Grin Grin  Like your opening statement CH, used to be everywhere except the berthing area.

5MC: Flight deck amplified communication circuit[1]. Similar to the 1MC, except that it is only heard on the flight deck of an air-capable ship.'

When I was onboard the Tripoli, we could smoke on the mess decks, the First Class Mess or outside. After we hit the mine, smoking was restricted to the outside because the interior of the ship was filled with paint and paint remover fumes. The mine hit a paint locker on the starboard side.

Up till 98 when i got out, we still threw paper and food off the fantail.

The 5MC was for the flight deck if I remember correctly, was asked about it during my ESWS board......that was a long time ago
