I just got this thing scanned after it turned up again. This is by that famous CG artist, then TN now AEC (RET), Manny Angeles:

I don't care what the Bos'n told you, you are NOT authorized to recruit a 17 year old Filipina as your personal TN.

Remember just after relieving TANEY on OSN  (Ocean Station November, 1/2 way between the WEST Coast and Hawaii), doing an unrep drill, and as we broke away, Capt Randy Ross, went to full birds, then a sharp turn to starboard, washing down the entire starboard side of TANEY, then continued to do circles around the Queen.  As we departed, to go to a Navy FLEETEX before we went to Nam, he radioed, "Queen Mother, This Is the Queen.

Now THAT'S funny!  I spent two years on the Taney, long before there were 378's.  We were pretty proud of that ship, the only 327 on the Wets Coast and also the fastest ship on the west coast.

Between the Taney, the Dexter and the Barataria I spent WAY too much time on OSN.

I recall the Taney was on Bravo 2 one week and we spent so much time getting underway to haul in yet another broken down fishing boat that we ended up just anchoring in Drakes bay.  We had a crab feast......Saw all those crab pots close to the ship, threw out grapnels, hauled in the pots and emptied them of all the crabs.  Figured it was just the rent they owed us.   ROTF

Hans

Not so much for me, being on big whites, but I do recall the San Fran 82's getting beat up badly by repeat calls to the same fishing boats, going out and not having enough fuel to get back in.

As you say, once the Guard started to charge for the fuel, and we got out of non emergency towing, the  calls stopped.

Remember it got so bad, the San Fran 82' s would assume a SAR standby, on a bouy off Sauilitto, rather than YBI to cut the time to the bridge and sea.

The story of my active reserve time is short and stupid; for now, lets say that I would have retired out of the reserve if not for a very stupid Jg.  I'll relate the story some other time.  Back to the 82's in SF Bay:  Was on one on drill weekends but never left the bay  Grin  Ran escort for ammo ships leaving the weapons depot at Concord headed for Vietnam; took em right outside the bridge and let em go.  It was pretty fun with all the friggin peacenicks trying to get in the way to block the ships; sirens going, lights flashing whoopee  LMAO

If the peaceniks, were not enough, the River Pilots, didn't like the fact that the CG made madatory CG escorts.  I remember one incident, in which a River Pilot, downbound from Port Chicago, out ran his escort three times.  The escort reported to Group SAN Fran, who in turned notified Harbor Radar/Vessel Trqaffic System, to order the pilot to slow down and await his escort.  By the time he reached Angel Island and was going to be relieved by the BAR Pilot, Captain of the Port, had a 40 footer waiting with a letter from CCGD12, recinding his pilot's license, pending review.     Got Everybodies' attention.

The carriers and the subs where always fun to work, because at that time bridge to bridge didn't exist, and we worked the Navy 277.8mhz.

I had been transferred to Har/VTS San Francisco, after reterning from Nam.
