USCG's 180-foot Seagoing Buoy Tender - Update on former CGC SUNDEW

Sundew owner plans to move
vessel soon, but keeps plans quiet
Twin Ports businessman Jeff Foster remains close-mouthed about his plans for the

DULUTH
— Twin Ports businessman Jeff Foster remains close-mouthed about his plans for the retired U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sundew even as his employees are preparing it to sail again.
“It’s still developing.” he said. “We plan on having a lot of fun with the vessel. If everything goes as we hope, it will divide its time this summer between the slip I have in Superior, a slip at Bayfront and, of course, out on the lake.
“We’re still hopeful that we will have it under way the first of May,” he said.
Foster, owner of Jeff Foster Trucking Inc., is reluctant to share more specific plans.
“It’s coming right along,” he said Wednesday, after giving a friend a tour of the ship. “There are six engines onboard and we have two of them going, so we are a third of the way there.”
The engines that are running help provide electrical and hydraulic power to the ship. Foster is awaiting the results of an analysis of oil in the engines before doing more work on the engines that propel the 180-foot-long vessel.
The Sundew will be moored near Bayfront Festival Park when the tall ships are in town, Foster said. It also will be the site of an August benefit dinner for Woodland Hills treatment center.
The Sundew was donated to the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center for use as a floating museum in 2004. The ship failed to attract a sufficient number of visitors to cover the costs of docking, maintaining and staffing it during the tourist season, and the DECC put it up for sale last year. Foster offered just over the minimum bid of $100,000 for the ship. His was the only qualifying bid.
