I'm a HUGE fan of the show "Deadliest Catch" and I just popped over there a few minutes ago to check in on the news about how the crab fishing is going (the show isn't schedule to start for a month or two yet, but filming is going on right now).

Anyway - saw this link to a few pics of what someone says are a few Coasties about to ride a huge wave.
Check it out (apologies if you've already seen this):

Thanks Tali,

I'm also a big fan of the Deadliest Catch and I have every episode on DVD.  I think the skipper I am most impressed with in the series is Sig Hansen.  Sig seems to err on the side of caution where some of the other skippers IMHO take some risks with their boat and crew that I know I would be unwilling to take if it were my boat and crew.

These photos appear to be from the Coast Guard's 47-foot motor lifeboat training school at Morro Bay taken in December of last year which we have posted on the Coasties Rock - (VIDEOS) A salute to today's Coast Guard thread.  Lots of great videos on that thread so take some time and enjoy seeing the young men and women of the USCG in action.

Very impressive!  Thumbs Up

I was on a CG vessel once (I apologize greatly if I'm not using the proper term. My dad - Navy man - said it's "Coast Guard Vessel". I hope he was right  Shocked  Grin )

Anyway - when my mom passed away in '99, we went down to Mississippi, to the Coast Guard base down there, to spread her ashes into the Gulf. We know the guy who's the Team Leader at the Vet Center down there in Biloxi. He arranged for us to go out on a small vessel into the Gulf and scatter mom's ashes. It was one of the coolest things I've ever done (sad moment aside).

We didn't go out too far,...could still see land.
We spread her ashes, and then we saw dolphins...three of them...swim right up to the vessel, along side her.
The weird thing about that is two things:

1. My mom LOVED dolphins
2. The Coasties said the dolphins usually don't come in that close, due to their vessels and the shrimp boats.

I'll never forget it.

Katrina took out that base, but,...it was quite the experience.

 Thumbs Up

I agree...Sig is the best!
He has a website for the Northwestern....do you have the link? (I've got it bookmarked  Thumbs Up )

Tali-

Check out the "boats" section in this link and you might be able to spot the kind of boat you were on.

http://www.uscg.mil/datasheet/

As far as your Dad referring to it as a "vessel", that's OK, it is a generic term.  Any vessel in the CG over 65 feet is lumped into a caterory called "cutters".  Cutters can be either ships or boats.  For example, the Bertholf, the newest class CG ship being built, is 418 feet long and most definitely is a ship, however it is also proper to refer to it as a CG cutter.

A 110' patrol boat is referred to as a boat, but again can properly be called a cutter.

Confused now?

Anything under 65 feet is just a boat.   Grin

That top YouTube....is that Jake Harris (Phil's boy) they're talking to on the bow?
If it is...I wonder why he was on Sig's boat? (PS - I like Phil Harris too  Thumbs Up )

Ok...found it. It was like this one:
http://www.uscg.mil/datasheet/87wpb.asp

It might have been the one size down from that, but, now that I look at them, I'm certain it was a patrol boat.
(Thanks! Dad has all the info, and I need to get copies from him.)

Ahhhhh - Ex.... I ain't the saltiest one here... so forgive me for being a might bit tenative...

I thought a boat was anything 60 FT or less like our UTB, MLB, RHI etc.  Anything above 60 ft is considered a ship? (or in our case a cutter).... we don't name our boats...we use their hull numbers....we name our ships/cutters?   Did I get that right?

Therefore  110 ft cutter is a ship not a boat?  I think..... oh where's a boats or salt when you need one?   LMAO

BTW my tugs on the river 65FT in length were "cutters".

Best Wishes

Salba,

I think the dividing line between what is a ship vs a boat is pretty blurry.  The CG classifies the 110's as patrol boats though, the same as they did the 82's and 95's.  And they all had names.

And I agree, anything 65 feet or over is a "cutter".

Confusing, ain't it?   ROTF

Tali, I came across this story and I thought you might really enjoy watching the video and seeing the USCG in action.

Here's the story on the fishing vessel Ocean Challenger and the dramatic Coast Guard rescue of one of the Ocean Challenger's crew after she capsized and sunk in the Bering Sea.  The Discovery Channel crew filmed
the rescue live as it was happening during the filming of their television show, THE DEADLIEST CATCH.

It was about 10 o’clock in the morning of October 18, when the 600 foot car-carrier, M/V Overseas Joyce, heard the mayday call from the 58 foot F/V Ocean Challenger. The freighter was close enough for her crew to watch with shock as the fishing boat deployed her life raft in seas nearly 3 stories high. Shock gave way to horror as the smaller craft capsized, sending all of her crew into the frigid waters of the Bering Sea.

The master of the Overseas Joyce immediately relayed the distress call and location - approximately 60 miles south of Sand Point - to the US Coast Guard. Air Station Kodiak launched a C-130 air plane, an HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter, and the USCG cutter Munro. The car carrier and a second freighter, the R.J. Phifer, a 500-foot container ship, remained to help in the search.

The Jayhawk arrived on scene approximately an hour after the call. The conditions were reported as 50-knot winds, 30-foot seas and a temperature of about 45 degrees. Brutal on land, deadly at sea.

The crew of the Jayhawk, locating the only man wearing a survival suit, lowered a rescue basket into the frenzied waters and hoisted , Kevin Ferrell, 28, originally of Lynchburg, Va. to safety.

The Coast Guard rescue swimmer reached the skipper, 51 year old David “Cowboy” Hasselquist of Hoonah, and 26 year old Walter Foster, of Westport, Washington only to have them pronounced dead by the flight surgeon.

Still missing is Steve Esparza, 26, of Kodiak, Alaska.

Coast Guard C-130 pilot Lt. Jerred Williams said he arrived on scene in the afternoon with a second crew to look for the missing man. “The waves were so high you actually got white caps at the top of the wave,” he said. “And, then, with the wind streaking across the blue water, and the white turbulence everywhere, it made it very challenging to find a person in the water.”

The high waves and wind eventually made the search almost impossible by air so only the Munro continued the search for Esparza into the evening. The Coast Guard called off the search just before 8 p.m. that Thursday night. The search covered approximately 1,730 square miles, and lasted 46 hours and 20 minutes.

Kevin Ferrell was flown to the Cold Bay Clinic, about 50 miles away, then to an Anchorage hospital.
