I have been searching for models of the cutters that I served upon, often with out much luck.

I have found this site, but have no knowledge what the price would be for any of these models.

I have also looked into models of CG Ships Hawk and from what I have seen there is very little on the market.  I do see some from time to time come up on ebay.  As far as Motion Models go and I can only speak to their model of a 180, I would rate it fair to poor in accuracy and detail.  The Lego buoy tender Mesquite that I made is in my opinion a better representation of a B or C class 180 than their   IRIS CLASS 180.

Ron

I understand.  I have never dealth with this comp[any, but I can see what you mean.

I was not trying to promote them, just listing the site.

The scale is too big for my place, wish I could find a 1/700 or even 1/350  scale model of a 311, 255, The Storis, and RUSH, but what was available once, is no more.

Beer is on me.

I'm a little surprised that a company like Revell hasn't come out with at least a 378 model.  Hell, with a dozen of them built and 40 years worth of crews on them you would think there would be a decent sized market for them.

Revell used to have a 327 model and an icebreaker (Eastwind as I recall).

What bugs me Stan is that I have emailed ANCHOR BAY many times asking them to do a generic 378 and a C Class 180 and they won't even acknowledge having received my email.  So what do these asshats do, come out with the Mighty Mac in red or white hull and the WLM George Cobb.  Not that they aren't very nice models, but the numbers don't add up.  Consider how many have served on the Mac or the Cobb as opposed to how many have served on 378's and 180's.  Why do a model for the crew of one ship (Mac or Cobb) when you can do a single model for an entire class and just include a dry transfer sheet with the cutter names and numbers.

Go figure .... what a bunch of  at Anchor Bay

I was not familiar with Anchor Bay until you posted the link.  Clicked on it and realized that is the outfit that made a 110' that my son gave me.

I prefer models I can build myself.  Not too many comapnies around doing CG models though.  I'd love to build a 180.

They didn't have any "hot" chicks when I was in, so why should you get any?

Talk about a beautiful model of a 180.  John Estep (Square Knot) sent me a link to CGSVA member and
CGSVA National Secretary Ken Long's post on the
CGSVA website.

Ken's model of the IRIS WLB-395 was featured on the cover of  BOAT & SHIP MODELER
AWESOME MODEL KEN ..........

Shipmates,

I've been doing some digging around on the internet lately trying to zero in on how me might get a nice model of a 180.  I came across the Harbour Lights Collector's Forum and since I have a few of their lighthouse models, Barnegat Light, Sturgeon Bay Canal and Execution Rocks, I decided to join.  It turns out that Harbour Lights is the parent company of Anchor Bay, the folks that make the CG 46-foot motor lifeboat, the CGC Mackinaw, the WLM George Cobb and others.

The owner of the forums Rich is a former Coastie and he told me that the director of marketing Tony has been polling forum members for ideas for the 2009 line for Harbour Lights/Anchor Bay.  Rich told me that he had already suggested a 180 for the 2009 line but that I should go ahead and email him right away and state my case as to why Anchor Bay needs to add a 180 to the 2009 line.  So I sent him the email below this morning and I will keep you updated if anything should progress on getting Anchor Bay to do a model of a 180.  Also, Ken Long who built the outstanding model of the IRIS in the above post has agree to help and provide Anchor Bay with plans for the exterior of a 180 model.
Let's hope pulling together we can make this thing a reality........

Hello Tony,

You had posted on the Hell hath no fury like a Director of Sales and Marketing scorn thread that you would like to have some suggestions from members for the 2009 Harbour Lights line.

Just having joined the forum recently, I am sorry if this is too late.  I am a great admirer of the Anchor Bay model of the 175-foot WLM George Cobb.  I can really relate to that model having served on a 180-foot Coast Guard buoy tender from 1966 to 1970.

I and many others, where I am a CG Moderator for the Coast Guard Boards at usmilnet.com, would love to see a model of a U.S. Coast Guard 180-foot seagoing buoy tender and here is why.

As someone who has spent over forty years in marketing, I would have to speculate that a model of a Coast Guard 180-foot seagoing buoy tender would have much greater marketing potential than a new 175-foot Keeper Class buoy tender simply because of numbers, those numbers being Coasties that have served on them.

There are 14 Keeper Class tenders in service now that have been around for about 10 years, each ship having a crew of around 18.  Over the course of the last ten years if every ship had a 100 percent turnover (which they do not) there would be less than 2500 potential customers who served on a Keeper Class 175.

There were 39 original 180s commissioned at the end of WWII, each with a crew of around 45 men. 31 of the 39 served in the CG for fifty to sixty years. Estimating that over 100,000 Coasties have served on Post SLEP Class A and Class B & C, 180s would have to provide a much better marketing potential for a new model than the Keeper Class, 175-foot George Cobb.

Two Class C 180s to consider modeling would be the CGC SUNDEW, WLB-404 now a floating museum in Duluth and the CGC ACACIA, WLB-406 now a floating museum in Chicago.
