Might not be a bad idea to list what ratings were lost.  Here's a start:

Fire Control Tech, Radarman, Sonar Tech, Radioman, Boiler Tender, Engineman, Machinists Mate, Quartermaster, Steward's Mate.....

What did I miss?

There were a number of "aviation" ratings, including

Aviation Radioman (There weren't that many of them, so they could be grouped with the RM rating

Man, you guys are like the Navy with your rank. I could learn Japanese before I could learn the Navy and Coast Guard ranking/grading system.  LMAO

All what you are used to I guess.  To me Army, AF, and Marine insignias are a complete mystery.   ROTF

Notice none of the services crosstrain about the other service's ranks/rates, whatevers?   ROTF

Yeah, Kev, it's just like the Navy.  Lesson number one, enlisted people don't have rank, they have rate; officers have rank.  And, your MOS is your rating.

Actually, when I was teaching "Rates, Ranks and Insignias" in basic we did cross train.  I'm still pretty good with them, except for the Air Force, they've got too damn many stripes

Well Master Chief, being a ole buoy critter I know that the BMC is always right ...  Grin

According to the publication that Gunner posted HERE, the rating was originally Soundman.  Then the Sonarman (SO) rating was from 1943-1970 and from around 1970-1993 the rating became Sonar Technician (ST).   Being that the CG number of Williams who wore that jumper was 323-698, well my number is damn close to that so I would imagine that this Coastie served in the 1950s-1960s when the rating was "SO".

So it would seem that the premise "the Chief is always right" has once again been proven and I stand corrected.

THANKS ...   Thumbs Up
