Pusser Rum has been using that angle for advertising since it first came on the market.
Up until the time the Royal Navy stoped the Daily Rum Issue in 1983 the year after i enlisted all rum supplied was through a distillery owned by the crown it was located in Barbados it was sold in 1984 I think. Many thousands of Gallons of the rum was still stored in Gibraltar this was sold in 1 gallon stone flagons with a wax seal over the cork with the Admiralty anchor mark in it the Royal Navy still to this day retains a stock of rum that it issues to the fleet to mark special occasions. The last 2 that I remember was at the end of the Falklands conflict and the Queens golden jubilee.
The Australian navy and the New Zealandnavy still have rum issue.
If you want a Rum that is close to the old issue rum then a good Demrria rum from Guyana or Woods or Lambs navy rum is the way to go Pussers is to light for my taste.

Chief a little off on the date
Black Tot Day
Published at July 31, 2007 in History, Booze and Navy.
Hats off all, and a moment of silence to commemorate a black, black day in nautical history. For on this day in 1970 the Royal Navy stopped the 300-year-old practice of issuing noon spirts to crews around the world. After “Black Tot Day” things just haven’t been the same.
Grog tub for mixing rum
Black Tot Day - July 31st, 1970, when the last “tot was drawn in the fleet around the globe; a rather touchy subject with the old and bold!”
I have just discovered the Joy of Rum and I am a Pussers man."Up Spirits Chief" Thanks for your service.

Chuck
I have never been one to doubt the written word so i would go with the book as i have killed more brain cells than i care to remember I stand corrected on the time frame
as i entered basic in january of 1972 for the Royal Navy went in the New Guard in 83. I have found this link that i think you may like
http://www.axfordsabode.org.uk/spirit.htm
. where did you get that book i would like to buy a copy. when they did away with the rum issue they went to 3 cans per man of beer a day except in the senior rates mess where rum was still to be had as well as other spirits. As a boy seaman (under 18 ) I was not allowed beer so my self and 2 others used to eat our noon meals on the fan tail as we were not allowed in the mess during the issue of spirit's and beer. They also used to keep a bottle of rum in the duty seaboat for man overboards and in sick bay.
I have drunk my fair share of pussers I always brought back a few bottels when we went to the Virgin Islands.
When I get my next shipment of woods rum from home I will let you know and send you a taste. On a cold day try a shot of rum in some hot chocolate got my self through many a cold mid-watch that way.
Some times I think faster than I type and lose my self half way through. Thanks for the reailty check.

Just for Trivia knowledge Pusser was a slang term used in the Royal Navy for the supply officer. So any thing that was received from the ships stores was called Pusser Issue except for tobacco issue these where called blue liners named for the blue line with for RN ships only on the tube of the cigarette. He was also responsible for pay call every 2 weeks when we were paid a portion of your pay in hand this practise also went away in the mid 70"s when they went to direct deposit altough for ship deployed partial pay in local currency still occurred.
One of the best thing was old timers still used to smuggle rum aboard for trips up north for mid rats we used be issued block of cabruys drinking chocolate that we used to shave into a gallon jug add a can of condensed milk some sugar and some boiling water mix and you had some of the best Hot Chocolate then add half a pint of rum.
I used to carry rum every time I used to get underway on the 180's kept it in a cough medicine bottle to keep the chill off
Best wishes
