Stan,

Sorry about the link, it works for me.

The story in a nutshell,   NASA, in 1969,
launched a boiler plate Mock up of the Apollo Command Module into the Bay of Biscay in order to test the recovery capabilities of the Royal Navy and others.  They never found it and it was thought to be lost.

CGC SOUTHWIND , October and November of 1970 was doing an oceanographic survey of the Artic and after coming to within 435 miles of the North Pole was stopped by the ice and had to retreat south.  After a stop in Iceland, SOUTHWIND proceeded to the Russian port of MURMANSK, for a courtesy call.

The crew was reportedly well treated , but controlled.  and prior to leaving, the Russian Naval Authorities presented the SOUTHWIND, the missing space capsule.  Reportedly it had been recovered by a Russian "fishing vessel".  No mention of the Russian "discovery" had been made to the US or England, prior to SOUTHWIND's gift.

SOUTHWIND returned to the ice to complete the oceanographic part of the cruise then returned to the US, via GB. with it's gift.   The space capsule is now serving as a time capsule in Grand Rapids, MI, where it sits, awaiting opening in 2076.

The things, we Coasties collect.

Another part of the story, after the port visit, the SOUTHWIND, returned to the ice, where she was trailed by a Russian icebreaker.  During  ice ops, SOUTHWIND was "bumped" by the Russian.  The next day, the SOUTHWIND"S CO, launched a helo, which dropped bags of garbage on to the Russian ship.  There were no other "bumping" incidents.
