The United states Revenue Cutter Harriet Lane was named for a living person who actually visited the ship while acting as "First Lady" for her uncle, President James Buchanan.
Interesting lady, historic ship.

I don't care what the Bos'n told you, you are NOT authorized to recruit a 17 year old Filipina as your personal TN.

Early in my CG career I ran across someone who had been stationed on Harriet Lane (WSC-141) & while I was at Base Galveston I went out in the Gulf for a day on her sister ship, Cahoone (WSC-131) - I think the CO was Sam Early - to calibrate the RDF.

I have a few Lanes in my ancestry, so could be a (very) distant cousin of the lady.

A few years ago I saw an on-line article about a White House party hosted by Harriet Lane aboard the cutter.

I recall building a plastic model of the original Harriet Lane when I was a kid. Also built one of the original Roger B. Taney, a topsail schooner.
