This is a good thing...  IMHO, full-color patches should never go away.  Nothing wrong with full-color patches in garrison environment.

i don't think it matters a rat's ass... we still wear full color flags (i still had mine while deployed), and i doubt a whole lot of units are gonna bother

Hey doc... Did you make your 5 yet?

Well we got a "token" issue of 1 each subdued reversed IR American Flag.  At $16 each, I can see why they only gave us one.  I bought an extra just in case.

This matter of subdued vs. non-subdued (full color) insignia seems to have become a big deal in 1st Infantry Division.  Big Red One troops first arrived in Iraq wearing non-subdued patches (olive shield w/red numeral one) on their DCUs.  "We're not the Big Black One," commented the Commanding General, in explanation.  Pentagon folks had other ideas and soon required 1st Infantry Division to fall in line with the rest of the Army & display subdued shoulder sleeve insignia, color coordinated with their new ACUs.  This issue was even addressed by the current CG at last summer's Society of the First Infantry Division (1st ID's Veterans' organization) reunion in Colorado Springs.  Shocked  About 200 active duty Soldiers attended the reunion wearing full color Big Red One insignia on their Army Combat Uniforms, consistent information on this thread.

A close friend and fellow soldier was ordered to take off his Big Red One combat patch and replace it with the subdued version during our last deployment.

He took it off, but there was no replacing.  He just went sans combat patch- and has ever since.  He says he'll put it back on when they let him wear the full-color version again.

Whe the 2-1 CAB left here to re-deploy, they wore the unit patch with the red "1" on it.  Despite knowing the reg on it, I thought it was classy.  My dad's a 1st ID vet from Vietnam, so I agree with the "1" being red.

War?  Most I've heard is the Apache drivers test-firing their chain guns when they leave the airfield, and expending almost out of date Hellfires on the range.  Just waiting for my day off every 2 weeks, and then Mid-Tour R&R in April...

Meh.  It is what it is.

You're gonna miss it when it's over.
