BTW, don't forget my tag line by my AVATAR  ROTF

 Grin

Surface Force did not realize that Stan was refering to a '311, which as he mentions had no bow truster; sounds like the kid really could have used one though. But then, Surface Force is ex-Navy and knows very, very little about the USCG to begin with.  Cool

That's to be expected  , since the Navy uses tug boats  ROTF

Well, the "kid" was a full Commander, if not Captain (Don't actually recall) and one would expect he SHOULD have known what he was doing.

There were lots and lots of reasons we called him "Fearless Fletch", like the time he decided he did not trust his radar or lookouts and was coming into SF Bay. Foggy.....and he's stopping the ship, backing down  , maneuvering all over the damn channel.  At one point actually had this red buoy on the port side of the ship....he was completely out of the channel!!

The Radarmen were pizzed.  They were seeing all the targets and we were never closing on any of them.  Wasn't a darn thing wrong with the radar.....meanwhile this idiot is steaming in a VERY busy ship channel and maneuvering all over it.  I actually watched a tanker pass us.  They didn't seem to concerned about the fog. Bang head against wall

He was an embarrassment to the crew.  Crews like to be proud of their C.O.s.

Probably the person least likely to be mistaken for a pirate in all of naval history...... ROTF

I would have to say he was probably a wunnerful human being, great father, kind to small animals, and totally out of place being in command of a ship.

Stan, I know I have mentioned it before, but the absolute best ship handler I have ever known was a direct commissioned Ensign the CG hired as a computer programmer.

Probably honed his skills playing video games......  ROTF

Not so sure about that one. I believe this was in 1968 (we were on the Chincoteague), and the computer was a Digital PDP-8 with a whopping 8K RAM and had a dedicated Teletype machine for input.

I don't care what the Bos'n told you, you are NOT authorized to recruit a 17 year old Filipina as your personal TN.

Can't quite recall the model, might have been a PDP 8 or 11 or 16, but there was an early Star Trek game that the guys in the test department used to play at lunchtime where I worked.
