Day ate (8) called at 0800 they said call back at 1000 to see if anyone would be available, left at 0845 got there at 0945 went to work, at 1000 everyone was busy told the feller that I'd be at the boat workin.  Two fellers showed up at noon to put the old winders back in, I helped em with that, which was easyier than scrapin, but messyer cuz cauking was involved and the cauk was coming out the wrong end, they eventually got the tube off the gun and one used his finkers the udder used a putty knife, needless to say there was putty everywhere.  Plus the powers that be wanted the 3/4" plexiglass on the inside and modifications had to be made and we didnt have electricity.  One roof support was hack sawed.  The udder was hammered- rivets.  Plus the glass had to be trimmed with a hacksaw.

Do most Coasties get a class in tool use?  Some of these blokes seem a bit weak on tool use.  Do Coasties use channel locks(pliers) from observation- I don't think so.  Tho at their age I probably wasn't that handy either.

Tho I did pretty well with my entertainment center built outa amo boxes and the nails from them,  only two tools we had- hamer and hand saw.  The only paint we had was OD green.  Army in Vietnam we also had building projects, prefab ****house for the sargents E-6 and up, cement sidewalks, and that rickety bridge from the road to the perimiter bunker made outa pallets.

I think the guys come out in their spare time when I'm not there, their deadline is May 26.

Depends.  If they are non-rates (E-2 and E-3) then they haven't had any classes that include tool use.  Beyond that it depends on their rating.  Certainly a Gunner's Mate knows tools.  Also any Engineering rates.  We always tried to keep tools away from Boatswain's Mates cuz they might hurt themselves...... Well, a big part of a BM's job is maintaining the boats (painting, scraping, etc.) so if they are BM's, as opposed to E-2's and 3's they should know what they are doing.  In theory.......

day neon (9) called the day before, went to the station got two guys, but they didnt go to the boat till after lunch,  I piddled an hour at the station tawking with this one and that one.  Got to the boat at 11AM, and the school bus was still there, but didnt get harrased by the kids.  Think they were from my neck of the woods.  Bus said Saint Charles but not Newport, but some of the kids had sweatshirts with Masserants on them and Masserants are thick around here.  Saint Charles church is within spiting distance (on a windy day).  The coasties showed up as the kids were leaving.  Used the vac to suck the water outa my way for scraping and ended up suckin up the chips on the whole open rear deck.  Then proceeded to mess up the deck by the back of the cab scraping the undoor part to about a foot from the deck and the side wing.  Still a lot to do.   The coasties did the cab with sanders, left them still at it at 3PM.  Dont think I could have stayed longer, my arms and hands feel like there broke.  The 1" wood chisel worked the best today.

day 10 ,  stopped at station and coastie said there wood be four coasties working on the boat, didnt see hide nor hair.  Saw an orange whirly bird hovering near the station out in mid river.  Think they had a flap on and needed all their blokes for boat work.  Hot today, 73 deg and sunny till 1400 when God started weeping.  Ya eye know 73 aint really all that hot, but the cabin was reflecting all the heat back at me and eye wuz soaked before the rains came.  More chisel and scraper work, think eye have the hang of it now got a big pile of cheeps all over.  May have to bring  a parasol er an umbrella next time er a tarp.  By the pain in me arms I must be building arm muskles.

Rob/RON, like i always say you want to get something done on the web Ron,s the Man. Rob when you said you were going to help i never dreamed you would be a one man ARMY and i use that word in the correct sense. i really thought a bunch of old coasties would have turned out in that area, but all i can say and i know the station can say is THANK you, and like i say if you ever come out this way please give me a call and i promise to show you every thing there is to see and a Harbor Cruise on my 450 boat and i promise you won,t have to chip/paint it, and again i thank you for all you have done.
