I saw this line in the article about the new boat for Maui:

Quote
The U.S. Coast Guard held a blessing and dedication ceremony Wednesday, Oct. 21, at its small boat station in Maalaea on Maui for a new small boat.

Its the first time I've heard of a "blessing" for a CG vessel.  I have zero feelings one way or the other about it. It sure can't hurt.  But I do not recall ever hearing about  this before. Has anyone?

I had heard of it for commercial vessels, including annual blessing of fishing fleets.  Just hadn't run across it on a CG vessel.

So, will Muslims let the Bertholf sail in their waters?   New Smiley ROTF

I was not a plankhead in Jarvis, but on the first rotation crew when the plankheads went on their merry way to next assignments. When she arrived in Honolulu the first time, summer of 1972  there was a very big deal made about having the local kahuna ?? come on down and do up a very impressive ritual. Many of the photos were in the CPO quarters scrapbook for a long time.

It is a common tradition amongst fisherman to bless the fleet and individual boats/ships when they are launched.  First I can recall hearing about it regarding a commissioned USCG vessel.

Here's the photo of the blessing by the Kahuna.

Every year, many flotillas in the Coast Guard Auxiliary has "the blessing of the fleet."  Most use a Catholic priest.  What if you're Jewish??? Or Hindu???

Personally, I would like to see religion and the military separate.
