Derailing....

Why does SF always talk about SF in the third person. I've always been curious...

Back on track...

I'm just going to say that I think there were better choices.

As I read Bouy's first post on this thread and saw the official CG picture of this guy, My first thought was holy **** this guy looks like the embalmer was drunk while preping him for his funeral. I know that might be a bit on the harsh side, but first impressions are VERY hard to overcome. I remember seeing Thad Allen on TV, before he was CCG, while he was overseeing hurricane katina, my first impression of him was this guy would make a good CCG someday. The Executive head of any Org. should look good and put forth with his body language and demeaner that I am in control and all is well. the opposite being if someone gives you the creeps, no matter how good at command they are, they still give you the creeps.
Just my measley 10 cents worth.

Just some insight on Papp when he was CO of the 180 he required all bridge watchstanders in the uniform of the day IE bravo uniform in winter trops in summer  which inport is no big deal but underway after a hard day of buoy ops is always fun  to change into your best uniform to spend 30 minuets ob the helm then climb to the flying bridge for lookout and watch your flat cap get blowen away.

Surface Force thinks it’s pretty fun to do. Surface Force just does it for fun, but not all the time, because that would be just plain silly...  Cool

To give the VADM his due - and perhaps 3rd person, 1st person Surface Force too:

Sometimes - you need the right leader at the right time.  I've served with a few that although I never wanted to serve with them again - at the time they were the right type to get the job done; or if I needed a professional on the other end of the radio - I'd want that person there.  Without names - I was deputy to one such leader.  Man the guy could get stuff done.  Wheel and deal, find the money pot, move the mission forward.  But he also ran over people. And although he could hob knob with the best - it came off as superficial, not really caring.  So - was hard to support.  But I'd want him in charge troubleshooting with the STUFF hit the fan... but once it settled down - I'd want to be as far away from him as possible.

Perhaps, based on what SF said... maybe, just maybe

I'll wait and see which perception/reality holds true.
Best Wishes

This discussion brings to mind when I worked at Apple in the early 80's.  First VP of Operations was a very affable, hands on, get it down kind of guy.  He was a perfect fit for that period in the history of the company.  Once we went public he retired as a multimillionaire.  His replacement was a man that had been my boss.  Absolutely data driven.  Almost no personality or people skills.  But if you needed a leader to watch the costs while expanding the business, he was the perfect man for the job.

Sounds like those two might be similar personality-wise to Admirals Allen and Papp.
