The finest Service chow I experienced was at Little Creek, Virginia Naval Base in 1962.  There was a huge dining hall -- large enough to serve a complete Infantry Battle Group (approximately 1,800 men) at once, plus Sailors, Marines, & UDT trainees.  We actually had a choice of meals and all the ice cream we could eat!  Even the SOS was good!  We Big Red One Troopers from Ft. Riley thought we'd died & gone to heaven!

As I mentioned before in a previous post.  I don't ever remember a bad meal in the 22 years I was in the Guard.  Like the article said, these guys have to come up with tasty, nutriious, and hot meals 4 times a day in even in adverse conditions.

They are truly, in my eyes "Guardians".

And kudos to the commands that let them use their imagination and be as creative as they like.

We've got some good cooks at the MSU and the ones at Pier 36 were real good.

Wow, it must have really improved after I got out in '75.  I had some ships where the food was good but there were a couple cooks on one unit that really should have gone Boatswain's Mate.

Gotta admit, had some good cooks on the Blackhaw; open galley  ROTF ROTF.  Although the two Filipino cooks were pretty good.

Open galley was especially nice after a long night of drinking.  Stumble in and throw a steak and a couple eggs on the grill.... Grin

Chow improved over the years from '78 to '01.  In '78 we seemed to have pork adobo at least once a week.  Thank God for Pinatubo.
