If you tell me how to post that pic...I'll find it.

I use the easy way.  When you select "reply" there's a spot at the bottom of the reply box that says "Additional Options".  Click that and you can then "attach" the picture.

That area right outside the Golden Gate, the famous Potato Patch, could get rougher then hell!  Tide and currents banging into each other to get through that funnel!

I'm looking for those pics....

The area we rolled was actually off of Ocean Beach (south of the Golden Gate)...If memory serves me (doubtful it's that accurate).....about 2-3 miles from shore. I could be wrong but the potato patch is just to the north, or the north "corner".

Potato patch is straight out from the Gate and yes, I think Ocean Beach is just south of there.

FFS -- there was a picture of the place that hung on the wall of the transit barracks in Alameda.  Aerial view.  It looked like a sunken aircraft carrier.  As I recall the highest point of land was about 6 feet.

And you loved it??????   Crazy LMAO

I also did, and so did I.
It was one of the most beautiful, relaxing, interesting, and entertaining places I ever visited.
We had one "high water" situation just to remind us of what could happen if a typhoon should come too close. The water came up to where ALL of the land mass of the island was covered, but not quite into the buildings.

On one occasion, most of us agreed to give blood if the Red Cross would send a bunch of women to collect it.
On another occasion, some good people at CCGD14 got up a tour group of female Coasties to come out and visit with us. Not surprisingly, a few of them decided they would like FFS as a permanent duty station.

That just about describes it.  And yes, I loved it.  I have many fond memories of the place.  JerryM describes it the best, I could not think of a more beautiful place....in its own way.

If they could, people would actually spend money to be at a place like that today for the peace and solitude.  And hey, if you enjoy watching wildlife, you can't beat it.  Birds, sea turtles, and the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal.

Its part of the Hawaiian Wildlife Refuge, and not just anyone can go out there today.
Tern Island, (the island that looks like a sunken aircraft carrier) is now a research center.

During WWII, the Japanese were actually using it as a staging point.  In the later years, I believe it was a monitoring station for some nuke tests held of Johnston Island....not sure about that part though.

Should be a pic.  A thumbnail.  I see it....if you see a small pic (thumbnail) then it should open when you click on it.

If you don't see it just go to Fred's Place photo album and look at the last 50 pics posted.

Old guard.  Certainly wouldn't be allowed these days.

Another Old Guard.  Note the "No Smoking During Meals" mural behind the 1st Class table.
