According to msnbc an unknown quantity of the newly minted George Washington "gold" dollars have gotten by inspectors and are now in circulation.  Some would say, "it's a good start, In God We Trust shouldn't be on our currency."

Since the book says, "the love of money is the root of all evil"  maybe God wouldn't be disappointed that these coins escaped detection before leaving the U.S. mint.  By the way, collectors are grabbing them up on ebay for about $50 a pop.  What do you think....it's a good start or nay, In God We Trust should remain on U.S. currency?

From what I read it was an error, plain and simple.  Probably because there are no other coins that have engraving on the edge of the coin.

As far as whether or not it should be there, I say it should.

Ron looks like the price is already going up.  I'm seeing between $150-$300 for the smooth edge ones and between $10-$20 for the ones with the printing upside down.  There's A LOT of action on these things at ebay with some VERY aggressive bidding especially towards the end of the auctions, so if anyones interested I suggest they make a move pretty quickly.  I just picked up #5 of the upside down printed ones for $25.50 including shipping.  Does anyone know of any statistics for these errors, such as how many were minted without any writing on the edge, or how many were minted and released with the upside down writing?  -Jeff

Don't know how accurate it was, but an article yesterday said as many as 50,000 of the non stamped may have been released, and that should keep their cost around $50-$60. But you said they were already higher than that, so I'm not sure.

Well it looks like I've been had!  Stupid me for falling for the slick advertising on Ebay.  Seems acording to http://coins.about.com/od/errorcoinsdievarieties/a/edge_lettering.htm the upside down printing is not an error, but rather a randomly generated inscription. Apparently the ones without any lettering at all are the only valuable ones.  Oh well a least i got five uncirculated 2007 Denver GW's in holders to give to my nephew for his first birthday next week.  DOH!! (as Homer would say) -Jeff

Thats a good point Ron,  I guess with a Dremel tool you could make the value rise from$1 to well over $200 pretty easily.  I feel pretty stupid for falling for this, but will chalk it up to "A lesson learned" and that I should pay a little more attention to advertising on Ebay.  I recieved the coins yesterday, and as I said before at least I have a nice set of coins to give to my nephew on his first birthday next week! -Jeff

Send one to that puke that shamelessly exploited his daughter over the "Pledge of Allegience". Should make his day.

It's starting to sound like the ones that were minted properly will be the only ones with any value!  LOL! -Jeff
