I keep getting a "Suspicious Website" dialogue box when I move around USMILNET, even though McAfee marks the site green.

Anybody else seeing this annoyance with McAfee??  AARRGGHH

Mee too; but not all the time.  It changes when I move around the forum boards.  Some boards the yellow bar lights up and I get a "phishing" alert.  The the alert states the site MAY be a phishing.  Any ideas

I wish it was that simple of a fix, unfortunately we’re all susceptible to phishing and pharming scams (Mac or PC).  It appears the primary source of phishing / pharming is from the internet itself and e-mails (e.g. the faux Pay Pal request to confirm personal info e-mail).

The alerts we’re getting may be more of a “pharming” misdirect warning for the usmilnet site.

I little bit of “net surfing” has recommend that we request our Host report the attempts of phishing or pharming to usmilnet for action.

You do have a point with the Mac though, I'm ready for a new laptop and this new Vista OS doesn't look too promising for the basic home user, good topic for another thread though... Thumbs Up

When you have problems like this, post them in the War Room/Feedback section; you'll find it on the main page toward the bottom.  There are computer folks on here that may be able to help. I get a pop-up that gives me a securtiy warning every once in a while; I don't use McAfee.

I can only make some educated guesses here. The site DOES track a member and their IP. That's the way the software works. (NO, there's no funny stuff going on)

I never have cared for McAffee. It's a bloated POS and gives more false positives than it should. It also misses some things, like trojans. Norton is even worse. There's plenty of GOOD free anti-virus software out there. And Zone Alarm is a dandy software firewall, which is also free. I use AVG & Avast!

Hans / Thor,

Thanks for the response.  I'm just an "arm chair" computer warrior attempting to attack a problem.  I'll post in the war room / feedback section should the alerts continue.  It doesn't occur all the time; but when it does occur I have to address the alert before I continue (I shouldn't complain, it's just a couple of mouse clicks; but it is anoying).

Thor, it could be the IP tracking too; but other sites also do that & I don't get the alert.  In fact, this is the first time I've seen this alert.  Could be one of those ever popular updates that automatically show up.  I'll have to look into the free anti-virus sites that you reccomend, thanks again & GREAT SITE!

Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of McAffee to check it out. All I can say is there is nothing i know that may have "nefaious' intentions with regards to the site. I'd really like to see why McAfee marks it as suspicious and exactly when/ where.

I did some checking on the McAfee site: http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=411652

Seems this is a known issue.

Thor, I use Trend Micro; every now and then I get a pop-up that tells me that there may be a security risk with the page I'm on and asks me if I want to continue.  Doesn't happen often, but it does happen.  I tell the pop-up to go away and it does.

All,

FWIW, I am using Norton Internet Security 2007 and see nothing out of the ordinary going on with usmilnet.com.

I agree with others that the only truly secure computer is one that is a stand-alone (not connected to any network), has any and all drives (CD/DVD/USB) disabled and is turned off..

In the illustrius words of SGT Phil Esterhaus of Hill Street Blues fame, "let's be carefull out there!"

Got parallel threads going here.  Thor just posted a possible answer in the War Room.

I'd strongly recommend looking at the Apple Laptops. My local electronic toy store (Compusa) is leaving the
Southern California market for some dumb reason and I was able to pick up a new in the box i-Mac 24 for 10%
off retail WOOHOO So far am very very pleased with it Is taking a little time to figure out all
the different things with OS X AARRGGHH Before I got the Mac I had put Nod32 on my old windows laptop for antivirus,
it seemed to do a better job than anything else I've tried and it required less memory than anything else.
It also does most of it's work in the background so it doesn't keep bugging you with alerts.  My system really speeded
up after I got rid of Norton Grin

Thor, I totally agree with you about McAfee and Norton.  But I don't think there is any need to use both AVG and Avast.  Both are great, but I chose to use AVG only.  Running two resident AV programs just sucks up system resources without a corresponding gain in security.  I'd recommend that you choose one or the other.

Is your system behind a hardware firewall such as a router?  If so, then I think even ZoneAlarm or other software firewalls might be unnecessary so long as you follow good habits when it comes to web browsing and email.  Both ZoneAlarm and Sygate offer excellent outbound protection that you don't get with a hardware firewall, but common sense with email attachments and the like render them moot if you have a router.

I run them both because once in a while, AVG will miss something or not be able to block it. They use an insignificant amount of resources, even with them both running. The bigger hog is when Avast! is building it's back up. Once that's done, it doesn't use much. Like I said, even with BOTH of them running, it doesn't degrade my machine's performance much. The machine I use the most is a 1 GHz celeron with 512 Meg shared RAM. It's an OLD laptop that used to have Windoze ME on it. Now it sports XP Pro. (It was purchased in mid-1999)

Many thank for all the input from everyone. I'm not getting the annoyance this evening.   Thumbs Up

Oh, and my brother has a MAC, and all IS not perfect according to him, so I'll keep my crappy (paid for) Dell Dimension 2400  Grin  He and I have tried various online gaming interactions...some of the stuff isn't even written for Macs, so...

The next machine is getting paid for out of my business account!  Evil

Separate note: Actually, a problem last year led me to the Aumha.net site. I ran HijackThis and made a log file. Used the Kaspersky On-line scanner, and then posted results back to Aumha forums. Great help with lengthy, detailed actions. It's funny, because McAfee initially caught some of the virus, but then gave me an indication the machine was clean when it wasn't. Aumha rocked.
