The Coast Guard ship had experienced mechanical difficulties during its mission and was running so low on water that the crew had stopped showering by the time of the March 17 raid, officials said.

Jeeze; if they sold a little of that stuff on the side they could probably afford an overhaul  LMAO LMAO .  Just kidding.

I was on a 311 on Ocean Station November and we lost our evaps.  It was summer....zero showers for all enlisted personnel.  The XO decreed that Officers could take showers because "offocers are gentlemen and gentlemen don't stink."   AARRGGHH Hammer Hammer

They did steer the ship toward any rain squalls though so that we could try to clean up using the rain.  Guess that wouldn't work in today's coed CG.

A C-130 flew out from Calif. and dropped repair parts for us.

20 tons puts a dent in someone's distribution chain.  We may never "win" the drug war but a "retailer" or two probably had to do without for a couple days or weeks because of this bust.

The HITRON concept is certainly making small inroads into the supply lines.

You may not realize just how correct you are.

Many moons ago, when stationed at the 13th Coast Guard District Office in Seattle, I had to give the daily intel brief to the District Chief of Staff, Capt Greg Pennington.  I had a certain grin on my face when I reported on a rather large drug bust made by one of the Seattle based 378s.

The good Captain told me to "wipe that smile off my face" and then proceeded to point to the Seattle container ship terminal and said, "see those hundreds of shipping containers down there?"  I responded in the affirmative. Captain Pennington continued, "the bust made by our cutter is only the tip of the iceberg.  99 percent of the illegal narcautics smuggled into the United States comes in through those containers and unless we have probably cause, there's not a damn thing we can do about it."

Those containers plus hundreds of tractor-trailer rigs entering our borders with Mexico and Canada do so without the benefit of customs inspection per the terms of certain foreign trade agreements and treaties such as NAFTA.

The orignial plan was that U.S. intelligence operatives overseas would detect illegal shipments at the points of origin.  However, that doesn't seem to be working very well.

The rapid expititing of shipping containers and tractor-trailer units into our country, while greate for commerce, completely negates the "war on drugs".

MarkW51:

Mark... Capt P. was one of the good guys.

BTW... I keep seeing your point, and understand it, about the shipping containers and inability to inspect the vast majority of them...  but "completely negates" our war on drugs begs the question of are you proposing we stop or don't celebrate our minor victories when they occur?

I don't think you are... I sense some frustration we aren't doing more... vice we shouldn't be doing anything...  so unless otherwise informed... I'll keep believing the frequent posts on this issue is just to keep it in the public eye.   Wink
