Threadpics

In January, 2001, the US Coast Guard had a class A flight mishap onboard the USCGC CAMPBELL (WMEC 909) where during the twilight hours, a HH65A entered a dynamic rollover after landing before tiedowns could be installed.  After the helicopter’s main rotor blades contacted the deck, the helicopter rolled completely onto its right side and then spun 130 degrees counterclockwise until it faced the stern of the ship.  Only minor injuries resulted, three members of the flight deck crew jumped overboard to avoid the rolling and spinning helicopter.  Good call lads….. I would have jumped too!

Shocked Shocked  That's some picture Gunner!!  For someone that has never served on a "white one", helo ops is a different world.  Thanks for sharing.

BTW Gunner  Threadpics is exactly right.  Between us there's got to be a ton of history and interesting pictures; what better place to accumulate some of this stuff than here.  I'm throwing in a little jab at the rest of you; you got pictures, post em!!  JerryM and the rest of those that have posted pictures, I'm not  Chair Shot you, thank you very much for your contributions.

Helo Ops (Helicopter Operations) was a real adventure at sea for Deck Force.  As a SA on Deck Force, I was an aft helo tiedown for the ol’ HH-52.  We stood in the flight deck nets waiting for the command to release or tiedown.  Later in my cutterman days, I was an in-flight Helo observer for drug operations.  Air Liberty, two hours of sight seeing; the one time I bring my piece of crap camera I see nothing but "Caribbean Blue".

I did capture our landing sequence during a series of touch & goes, note the location of the deck tiedown crew & LSO.  Following procedures saved the crew on CAMPBELL from the spinning & rotating blades:

Oh crap, that had to hurt.  I hope the sailors in the boats following were able to get to the helo crew in time.

The Basswood was one of the tenders that preceded the Blackhaw in servicing aids in Vietnam.  If you haven't yet, read about it Here
