That's actually one of the fun parts Deb.  No, that's not macho talking, there's something about being out at sea in a storm that's really invigorating.  You're probably less likely to get sea sick in conditions like Buoy and I posted than in a nice, glassy, rolling swell (might be because your adrenaline is up a little).  I'm very lucky in the fact that I don't get motion sickness, but have been around enough people that do where I can tell the symptoms.

Having grown up on boats by the time I was twelve I didn't get seasick any longer.  That was a plus most of the time but when we had real heavy seas like in the photo above or below, often times myself and only a few others were able to stand the watch.  That meant 2 on - 4 off, throughout the duration or until some of those who were sick recovered enough to stand wheel watch.  If you were out on SAR, that could be very draining.

Deb:

I was once asked by a group of six graders (during a School Partnership event) what was the best memory I had of going to sea...

I had lots of good memories... but the best?  After thinking about it - I truthfully answered riding out a hurricane in mid ocean...  OF COURSE I got funny looks... so then I had to explain...  it's not the winds and waves, the storm sounds or feelings... it's the colors...  THE MOST PURE blues, greens, greys, browns... clear, sharp, vivid no matter which direction you looked.

Would I purposefully go seek that out again... heck no... my stomach churns and trying to balance against the pitch and roll does get tiring...  but having found myself in the middle of the eye... I couldn't help but admire what was around me...

Call me crazy... but that's a picture I'll take to my grave.

Best Wishes.

I'm in the motion sickness contingent Undecided

I've only gone out deep sea fishing a few times....between the rocking, the diesel fumes, and the boredom.....oooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh

The first time I went flats fishing, I only slept about an hour (the fact that it was New Year's Day and we'd partied until 2:30 in the morning didn't help Grin)....I was so afraid that I would get sick and hate it....I was soooooo wrong!

I love it......and it seems to help that I eat something about once an hour. I can't drink alcohol out on the water no matter what.

now, if flats boats would just have a potty....but I'm very talented with a Dasani water bottle! Grin

Deb:

I presume you're not a big fan of Roller Coasters either!   ROTF

Heck... riding these babies is just like riding a roller coaster - but only for longer periods of time!   Thumbs Up

Nope! Grin

When I was in my late teens...I developed migraines. Along with them came motion sickness. According to the neurologist..that is a common symptom. I also don't drink brown liquor, beer, or wine. Fortunately, I have no problem with vodka or tequila.. Grin

Deb:

While attending St. Louis University and living in dorms (old days when no alcohol was allowed)... we used to put vodka or gin into "empty/cleaned out" after shave bottles...

Trust me... I had plenty of problems with vodka or gin in those days... not to mention the fear factor of actually messing up and taking a swig of Hai Karate!

Actually the roughest seas I ever had to deal with did not happen when I was in the CG.  It happened in January 1961 when my family and I crossed the North Atlantic in hurricane force winds on the luxury liner TS BREMEN.  The crossing took 1-1/2 days longer for the crossing than was scheduled by North German Lloyd the ship's owners.  By the time we reached New York nearly every single safety glass window on the promenaude deck each one being about 4'x6' had shattered and broken out from flex of the liner in the rough seas.  I remember my brother and I unlike most on the ship including the crew were not sick.  When we went to the luncheon and dinner sittings on one of those days a buss boy came to our table and told us there was nothing to eat because all of the cooks and servers were all in their cabins seasick.  The buss boy ended up bringing us some fruit to eat for both meals.  As you can see from the photos the seas were very rough.  IT WAS A BLAST, I WAS 16 AND I LOVED IT, A GIANT 3 DAY ROLLER COASTER RIDE!

Goin' out of the cut in Miami, three days before a hurricane, the 35 footer I was on had the sea drop out underneath her yep-airborn- the sudden stop when she hit water sure jarred the teeth.  First mate on the fishing boat went over the side because of the rogue wave, luckily we got him back aboard and this time he strapped in.
