I love the movie "The Guardian" and this video contains many photos
from the movie.  Of course I am a little bias when it comes to that movie
as  this photo of my grandfather Harold Wilkins (third from the left in the
foul weather gear) stowing gear on the front steps of CGSTA #110 following
a surfboat drill in 1917, appears in the credits of the movie.

I just came across this story this morning and even though it happened almost two years ago it's a great story of our young men and women in action.

COAST GUARDSMAN NOTCHES FIRST RESCUE

The 100-foot long charter fishing vessel Continental Shelf out of Moorehead City, North Carolina with Skipper Dave Tilley is a supporter of Military Appreciaton Day.

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — "I knew from day one that I was going to be in aviation," says Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Chris Humpal, an avionics electrical technician stationed at Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City.

On Sunday Sept. 2, 2007, Humpal notched the first rescue of his Coast Guard career when he hoisted a 58 year-old boater suffering from chest pains while aboard a 100-foot charter boat nearly 40 miles off the coast of North Carolina. "I had a streak of standing duty where I had some quiet, quiet nights," said Humpal. "I have been waiting patiently for my turn".

The duo were on board an HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter off the Coast of North Carolina. (U.S. Coast Guard photo by Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Evanson)

Humpal, 24, is a native of La Vista, Neb., and a part of a military family that spans several generations. "Both my brother and brother-in-law are in the Navy, my father was a Marine and both my grandfather's served".

Humpal who is also known as "Humpy", has served in the Coast Guard for five years. Since 2004, he has studied night and day preparing to be a crewmember aboard the HH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopters that dot the North Carolina sky on a daily basis.

"Saving a life is like no other feeling in the world," said Humpal. "Your not going on a routine [law enforcement] patrol, or training flight but your going out with the intent of saving someone's life"..

There is a high probability that more rescues lie in the path of Humpal, but the first rescue is a special one. "Saving someone's life is the greatest high in the world, I don't know why anyone does drugs," he said.

Coast Guard's top
eleven videos of 2009

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Coast Guard released Wednesday its top 11 video compilation for 2009, highlighting the year's most compelling cases from the work done every day by America's Guardians. The Coast Guard selected 11 videos to remind people of the service's 11 statutory missions.

“As the 23rd Commandant of the Coast Guard, it has been my pleasure to serve with such dedicated men and women who sacrifice so much to serve our great nation,” said Adm. Thad W. Allen, Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard.  "I am truly grateful for their hard work and dedication. During 2009, they committed themselves to maintaining the nation's maritime safety, security, and environment. They are America's Maritime Guardians.  The best videos of 2009 clearly illustrate they are always here to protect and ready to serve."

The public is encouraged to vote online at the Coast Guard's YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/USCGImagery, for their favorite video in the Coast Guard’s best video of 2009 contest.  The Coast Guard Compass, http://coastguard.dodlive.mil/, will be highlighting one video per day starting Dec. 21 through Jan. 1.

The top 11 video compilation includes:

•The rescue of a paraglider pilot who crashed on the shoreline of Cape Lookout near Tillamook, Ore., by an aircrew from Air Station Astoria, Ore.
•The capture of suspected pirates from a response to a vessel distress signal from Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment Team 409 while operating under Combined Task Force 151.
•A medical evacuation of a crewmember from a U.S. Navy submarine off the coast of Wash., by an aircrew from Air Station Astoria, Ore.
•The simultaneous pursuit and interdiction off two drug smuggling boats 80 miles of the coast of Guatemala by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf.
•The rescue of two crewmembers from a fishing vessel on fire 10 miles off the coast of Long Beach, Wash., by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Active and aircrew from Air Station Astoria, Ore.
•The rescue of two people from a burning boat near Corpus Christi, Texas, from an aircrew from Sector Corpus Christi, Texas.
•The rescue of six people from their capsized vessel two miles from the Columbia River, Wash., by a boatcrew from Cape Disappointment, Wash., and an aircrew from Air Station Astoria, Ore.
•The response to US Airways flight 1549 emergency landing in the Hudson River near Manhattan, N.Y., by boatcrews from Sector New York.
•The rescue of a man whose canoe flipped in heavy surf in the Necanicum River near Gearheart, Ore., by an aircrew from Air Station Astoria, Ore.
•The dewatering of the fishing vessel Blue Diamond 90 miles east of Atlantic City, N.J., from the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Sailfish.
•The rescue of three people, their cat and dog during the Red River Valley floods from an aircrew from Air Station Traverse City, Mich.

Reading some posts on various boards, seems to me that some Coasties are suffering from an identity crisis.  I think this video kinda puts it in perspective  Thumbs Up

This is one great video.
Too bad it's too long for a television commercial.
